Settlement Rights for Gurkha Servicemen

Martin was recently elected chair of a new All Party Parliamentary Group on Gurkhas’ Rights and is campaigning for the Gurkhas to be given the same settlement rights to live in the UK as other foreign nationals who have served in the British army.

Martin successfully persuaded the Home Affairs Select Committee to back the campaign. We are currently waiting for a decision from the Government who are obliged to publish a new policy following the successful High Court judgement last September which ruled that it was unlawful to discriminate between Gurkha soldiers who retired before or after 1997. Currently settlement rights only apply to Gurkhas who retired after 1997 which means, for example, that those Gurkhas who fought for us in the Falklands War do not have the right to settle in Britain even though the government extended settlement rights to the Falkland Islanders themselves.   If you want to know more about the campaign please go to:-

Martin’s Actions on the Gurkha Justice Campaign:

Martin gathered signatures to a local petition on this issue from his Reading West constituents including on-line through this website. That petition is now closed - many thanks to those who signed it.
