Salter Supports Action for Children Campaign

Martin Salter, Member of Parliament for Reading West, has shown his support for vulnerable children and young people by pledging to be there ‘as long as it takes’ in signing up to a new campaign from children’s charity Action for Children.

Action for Children is the new name for the National Children’s Home, one of the UK’s leading children’s charities, which was established in 1869. They are committed to helping the most vulnerable children and young people in the UK break through injustice, deprivation and inequality, so they can achieve their full potential.

Mr Salter took time out of his busy schedule to meet with Action for Children at the Labour Party Conference in Manchester, and learn more about their work. He signed up to the ‘As Long as It Takes’ campaign which calls for the end of short-term, reactive politics to provide more consistent and long-term support for vulnerable children and young people across the country.

Mr Salter said:

“One of the reasons I first stood for election as a local councilor nearly 25 years ago was to improve facilities for children. Action for Children’s research has shown that there have been over 400 different initiatives, strategies, funding streams, legislative acts and structural changes to services affecting children and young people over the past 21 years. We need more consistent long-term policies to protect vulnerable children, and that is why I am happy to sign up to be there ‘as long as it takes’.”
